City traveled to Omaha Saturday and claimed the club's biggest win in years,
downing the Omaha G.O.A.T.S. 18-15 at Storz Rugby Complex. The win snaps a long
losing streak to Omaha and puts City at 3-1 in the Mid-America DII league
table.
For the second league contest in a row, the match came down to the final
seconds, with Kansas City's defense needing to stand up the G.O.A.T.S. at the
try line. The game looked like it might have been blown open from the start,
however, as Omaha No. 8 Jake Bowers scored in the opening minute, running hard
off the side of the game's first ruck, shucking would be tacklers en route to a
long range try.
City proved resilient, though trailing 7-0, and came out swinging from the
next restart. Prop Mike McDaniel was the one who eventually punched in KC's
first try, drawing the underdog visitors to within a conversion. The sides
swapped tries once more, with McDaniel scoring another for City. Both were
unconverted, and Omaha added a penalty to take a 15-10 lead into
halftime.
Kansas City kept chopping wood in the second half, and they were helped by
Bowers receiving his second yellow card of the game, resulting in ejection. The
first came when he stomped on a tackler in the first half, and the second was a
result of a dangerous tackle on McDaniel, who frustrated Omaha with his hard
running.
City failed to convert the possession deep in Omaha's end into points,
which was just one of a few times they left points on the board. City was held
up twice on the day, and passed up a makeable shot at goal to go for a try,
which never came to fruition.
KC finally leveled the table when scrumhalf Brandon Naghshineh blasted over
the try line in the corner. He missed the conversion, making it 15-15. With time
winding down, Naghshineh would make his only kick of the day, a penalty, to give
City the deciding lead.
Omaha marched to within inches of City's try line with no time left on the
clock, but Kansas City rebuffed their first few efforts to cross the line, and
an Omaha drop goal attempt sailed just right of the uprights, giving KCRFC the
three-point road win.
McDaniel was named KC's man of the match.
City's second side, which was helped out by some Northwest Missouri State
and Creighton students, fell 41-24 to the University of Nebraska.
All healthy players will travel to Little Rock, Ark. Nov. 9 to compete in
the Ozark Tournament. City opens with an 80-minute contest against Little Rock,
which will count as the first of two out-of-conference league games.
Because the Mid-America league is so small this season, each team has to
play two D2 opponents in matches that count toward the league table. Little Rock
has pummeled the likes of Springfield, Memphis, Nashville and the St. Louis
Ramblers this fall.
